The Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum invites applications for its 2027 Hess Faculty Seminar, held in Washington from January 4 to 8. The seminar turns to the writing that Jewish victims produced while the Holocaust was still unfolding, among them diaries and letters that open up their lived experience and their ethical vantage points. Participants will look at how such writing relates to Holocaust memory as it took shape over later decades, and at the clandestine archival projects that preserved it, including the Oyneg Shabes Archive in the Warsaw Ghetto. It is aimed at faculty and advanced PhD candidates who teach or plan to teach Holocaust-related courses at institutions in North America. Travel and lodging are covered for non-local participants.
