Workshop: Turning the Image Around. Anti-Judaism, Antisemitism, Satire, and Cultural Resistance across the Ages, Beer-Sheva

4. September 2026

The Department of the Arts and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev invite proposals for an international research workshop in Beer-Sheva on December 14, 2026. Hostility toward Jews and Judaism has taken different forms across history, shaped by many different circumstances. The boundary between theologically grounded anti-Judaism and modern antisemitism is neither simple nor uncontested, as images, accusations, and myths originating in religious polemic have persisted and acquired new meanings in secular and political contexts. At the same time, the history of anti-Jewish hostility is also a history of responses to it. The workshop asks about continuities and ruptures as well as the visual, literary, performative, and political strategies through which hostile representations have been appropriated, inverted, and contested. Contributions are welcome on caricature and propaganda, satire and humour as forms of response, the afterlives of medieval traditions, memes and digital culture, museums and education.

Deadline for proposals: October 11, 2026 | DETAILS
