Call for Papers: Who Makes Holy Writing? Authority, Ritual, and Material Practice in Religious Scribal Cultures
The research initiative Shaping Holiness at the Freie Universität Berlin and the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Preußischer Kulturbesitz are organizing an international conference in Berlin from February 15-17, 2027. It asks who is entitled to write a holy text and what turns an ordinary writer into a religious authority. The focus lies less on the finished manuscripts than on the people who produced them, on their training and on the rules under which they worked, among them the copying of Torah scrolls and of Qurans. Contributions with a comparative or methodological angle are particularly welcome. Abstracts of 300 to 500 words with a short academic biography are requested. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered for invited speakers.
