Call for Applications: Jewish Religious Life During the Holocaust. An Exploration of Essential Primary Sources

19. August 2026

The Programs on Religion and the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Manchester invite applications for a research workshop and a resulting edited volume. The workshop takes place in Manchester from May 18 to 20, 2027, and addresses the understudied subject of Jewish religious life during the Holocaust and its immediate aftermath, roughly 1939 to 1950. Participants each present a primary source or a cluster of related sources, contextualizing them and explaining their historical, theological, or linguistic significance. Topics include wartime rabbinic responsa on religious questions and on Nazi policies, spiritual resistance, conversion in wartime, religious life in ghettos and concentration camps, rabbinical networks, religious identities in so-called mixed marriages, and postwar questions surrounding death rituals. The planned volume will present the sources with accompanying essays for university teaching. Applications are welcome from scholars at all career levels. Accepted participants must commit to both the workshop and the edited volume and are expected to submit draft chapters by January 15, 2028. Travel and lodging costs will be covered for non-local participants, who also receive 150 US dollars towards meals and incidentals.

Deadline for applications: October 20, 2026 | DETAILS
