Digital Resource: VILNISH, Recognition of Handwritten and Printed Texts in Yiddish and Hebrew
Sept. 23, 2026
The Center for the Study of East European Jewish History at the Faculty of History of Vilnius University has launched VILNISH, a service for the recognition of handwritten and printed historical texts in Yiddish and Hebrew. It builds on the Vilne-Yiddish language model developed by Sergii Gurbych and uses machine learning adapted to historical sources. The recognised text keeps the original spelling and is delivered as a PDF or as an editable file. On request the sources are also translated into English or Lithuanian. The service addresses archives and libraries as well as researchers and private individuals working on family history. It is funded through the Lithuanian recovery and resilience plan.
