Call for Papers: Eastern European Holocaust Studies: Jewish Religious Life during the Holocaust

April 29, 2026

The editors of the journal Eastern European Holocaust Studies: Jewish Religious Life during the Holocaust invite submissions that examine Jewish religious life during the Holocaust and in its immediate aftermath. Contributions may explore how Jews sought to maintain, adapt to, or struggle with religious practice under Nazi persecution, including prayer and liturgy, the observance of Shabbat and Jewish holidays, life-cycle rituals (brit milah, marriage, and burial), rabbinic authority and leadership, clandestine worship, the smuggling of religious objects, theological and philosophical responses to suffering and divine absence, and the role of religion in the everyday life of refugees, as well as of Jewish men, women, and children in ghettos, camps, and in hiding.
