New FID License : Encyclopedia of Jewish Book Cultures, De Gruyter Brill

July 10, 2026

The Specialized Information Service for Jewish Studies now provides registered users access to the Encyclopedia of Jewish Book Cultures (EJBC). The EJBC is a dedicated database to the singularity of the Jewish book, tracing its history across more than 2000 years and all world regions. As an encyclopedia on book cultures rather than book contents, it places the textuality and materiality of the book at the center of its investigation and studies them in their broader cultural and intercultural context. It covers the paleographic features, intended function, cultural significance, readership, and design of particular books and genres, as well as the producer-consumer relations involved in the making and circulating of books. Edited by Emile Schrijver, the reference work appears online first with full-text searchable, richly illustrated articles and is continuously updated.
