Aug. 20, 2026

A research workshop on Sacred Sensoria. Jewish and Christian Embodied Experience in Early Modern Europe funded by the Israel Science Foundation takes place in Jerusalem from October 25 to 28, 2026. It is hosted by the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies at the Edmond J. Safra Campus of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with the second day held at the Prima Park Hotel. The three conference days address the frameworks of the sensorium, the contact zones between the two religions, and a comprative view of the senses. Nine panels cover perception and polemic in the Christian sensorium, mysticism, hermeneutics and embodiment in Jewish thought, preaching, voice and sound, urban sensoria and Jewish-Christian coexistence, as well as sight, materiality, and textual translation between the traditions. Keynote lectures are given by Bruce Gordon, Magda Teter, and Stefan Michels. A guided tour of the Old City of Jerusalem precedes the programme on October 25.
