Call for Paper: Identity and Resilience. Issues in Jewish Identity and Jewish Education in Contemporary Europe
The Dahan Center at Bar-Ilan University, together with the Goldstein Goren Center for Hebrew Studies at the University of Bucharest, invites proposals for an international conference in Bucharest on July 5 and 6, 2027. In recent decades Jewish communities across Europe have faced complex challenges concerning the continuity of Jewish identity as well as a rise in antisemitic incidents, including attacks on different kinds of Jewish institutions. Against this background the conference examines the roles of education, community, and culture in shaping contemporary Jewish identity, along with mechanisms of communal resilience. Topics include the role of community in shaping identity, Jewish community schools in Europe, teaching Jewish studies in European academia, Jewish education and culture in Romania, young people between identity and coping, and the causes of and responses to rising antisemitism. Researchers across the humanities and social sciences are invited, as are educators and community leaders. Conference languages are English, Romanian, and Hebrew.
Deadline for proposals: October 5, 2026 | DETAILS
