Conference: From Sea to Memory. The Sinking of the Tanaïs and Holocaust Remembrance
The Evlagon Institute for Cretan Jewish Studies at the Etz Hayyim Synagogue Chania and the GSA Historical Archive of Crete host an international conference on the sinking of the Tanaïs and its place in Holocaust remembrance. In June 1944 the ship was torpedoed off the coast of Crete, killing the deported Jews of Chania along with Cretan and Italian prisoners. Moving beyond nation-centric approaches to Holocaust memory, the conference brings together panels on refugee routes and maritime catastrophe, deportation and survival on Crete, comparative maritime Holocaust histories, artistic responses to the Tanaïs, Holocaust education, and questions of gender, testimony, and remembrance. The programme is complemented by a concert at the Etz Hayyim Synagogue and a tour of the Jewish quarter, and takes place at the Centre for Mediterranean Architecture in Chania.
