Symposium: Body, Soul, and Self. Jewish and Hasidic Perspectives from Antiquity to Modernity

Oct. 19, 2026

The Princeton Institute for Hasidic Thought holds its second annual fall symposium on November 1, 2026 at Chancellor Green, Princeton University. The day examines how body, soul and selfhood have been understood in Jewish thought from antiquity to modernity. Three sessions move from historical grounding through textual study to contemporary reflection: a panel on body and soul from biblical and rabbinic sources to modern Jewish philosophy with Leora Batnitzky and Naphtali Meshel, breakout groups reading primary Hasidic sources introduced by Eli Rubin, and a closing discussion on subjectivity today with Clémence Boulouque, Danielle Knafo and Dhananjay Jagannathan. The symposium is open to newcomers as well as to specialists.
