Call for Papers: Yiddish and the Visual. Material Culture and the Life of Objects
The Jona Goldrich Institute for Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture invites proposals for a four-day international conference at Tel Aviv University from May 16 to 19, 2027. The conference treats the material and visual dimensions of Yiddish culture not as ancillary but as central to its creation and interpretation, covering areas such as Yiddish typography and the book as object, illuminated manuscripts and geniza materials, amulets and everyday objects, the politics of museum display and contemporary artistic practice. Two themed panels are planned, one on Abraham Goldfaden and the material afterlives of Yiddish theater, one marking seventy-five years since the Night of the Murdered Poets. Scholars, curators, artists and practitioners may submit individual papers or complete panels. Selected contributions will be considered for an edited volume.
Deadline for proposals: December 18, 2026 | DETAILS
