Call for Papers: The Bible, Animal Studies, and the Sciences. Past, Present, and Future, Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies

July 10, 2026

The Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies (JIBS) invites submissions for a special issue exploring how deep engagement with the natural and behavioral sciences, especially with the zoological sciences in particular, can serve as an interpretive resource for biblical scholars. Animal Studies has become an important conversation partner for scholars of biblical literature over the past decade, yet a range of approaches has not been fully utilized in connection with biblical studies. Proposals should address the past, asking how advances in natural philosophy, early taxonomy, and evolutionary biology shaped earlier biblical commentaries, the present, asking how modern zoology, cognitive ethology, and ecology might refine readings of biblical texts, or the future, asking how dialogue between critical biblical analysis and empirical and behavioral studies might shape engagement with the nonhuman animal world. Submissions are welcome from biblical scholars, historians of science, zooarchaeologists, ethologists, and ecologists.

Deadline for proposals: December 15, 2026 | DETAILS
