Call for Papers: Jewish Women in Breslau, Wrocław and Silesia, 1770-2000. Gender and Biography in a German-Polish Borderland

Oct. 5, 2026

Indiana University and the University of Wrocław are organising a workshop on Jewish women from Breslau and Silesia, to be held in Berlin on June 8 and 9, 2027. The workshop asks how Jewish women shaped education and civic culture as well as intellectual debate between the late eighteenth and the twentieth century, in a city that was once home to the third largest Jewish community in Germany. The call names well known figures such as Edith Stein and Clara Immerwahr alongside lesser known voices such as Esther Gad. Contributions from a range of disciplines are welcome, among them gender history and borderland studies. Selected participants write papers of 3.000 to 4.000 words, which are circulated in advance.

Deadline for proposals: November 6, 2026 | DETAILS
