Call for Paper: Intimacies. Family and Sexuality in the History of Jewish Literature and Culture in Eastern and Central Europe 1900-1945
The University of Augsburg hosts an interdisciplinary conference on intimacy in regions shaped by European Jewish culture from January 20 to 22, 2027. It asks how intimate relationships were regulated, religiously standardised, socially practised, negotiated in literary terms, and culturally interpreted. Family is understood not as a self-evident unit but as a dynamic structure in which kinship, desire, care, conflict, and social norms are negotiated. The period from 1900 to 1945 brings the upheavals of European modernity into view, while the regional focus highlights the multilingualism, migration, and transnational entanglement of Jewish life. Contributions are welcome from history, literary, cultural, and art historical perspectives, on topics such as marriage and sexual morality, religious law and state regulation, queer and non-normative intimacies, violence and vulnerability in intimate relationships, and the visual record in photography, press illustration, and material culture. The conference addresses doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, and the working languages are German and English. Selected contributions will appear in an edited volume.
