Workshop: Before, During, After the Holocaust. Interwar Societies, Wartime Violence and Plunder, and Postwar Legacies in Central and Eastern Europe, Warsaw
The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews hosts a workshop in Warsaw from October 19 to 22, 2026, bringing together historians and social scientists. The workshop examines how pre-war socioeconomic structures interacted with discrimination and wartime institutions of violence to shape exposure to persecution and survival strategies, the appropriation and redistribution of Jewish property, and postwar social stratification, mobility, and urban change. The ten accepted papers address topics including wealth distribution in interwar central Poland, the role of German law in the expropriation of Jewish businesses, Jewish return and property restitution in the Lublin region, and the long-run economic consequences of the war and the Holocaust for Poland. The working language is English, and selected contributions will be invited for a special issue of Historical Social Research. The workshop takes place at Building S of the SGH Warsaw School of Economics, Batorego 8, and is supported by the POLIN Museum's Global Education Outreach Program.
