Conference: Ethics and Jewish Philosophy. From the Middle Ages to Today, Bar-Ilan University
Bar-Ilan University hosts a conference on the relationship between ethics and Jewish philosophy on October 26, 2026. Its starting point is Samuel David Luzzatto's claim, in the preface to his commentary on Genesis, that the Torah was given solely to guide people along the path of righteousness and justice. This identification of ethics with Jewish tradition shaped the understanding of Judaism held by many philosophers after Luzzatto, among them Hermann Cohen, Emmanuel Levinas, Martin Buber, Franz Rosenzweig, and Jonathan Sacks, and is equally characteristic of medieval thinkers such as Judah Halevi, Moses Maimonides, and Levi ben Gershom. At the same time, the gap between religion and philosophical ethics appears to have widened in recent years. The conference brings together scholars of Jewish and general philosophy to examine different approaches to ethics, both historically and in light of developments in technology, biology, and medicine.
