70 Years of LBI
The Leo Baeck Institute (LBI) is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. The anniversary will be celebrated at all its locations with numerous events under the motto 70 years of LBI. On June 17, the LBI is hosting a gala in Berlin.
In 1955, German-Jewish emigrants founded the Leo Baeck Institute in order to preserve the cultural legacy of German-speaking Jewry. Since then, the facilities of the LBI have been dedicated to researching and preserving German-Jewish history and culture. The institute's namesake and first president, Leo Baeck, was the last leading representative of the Jewish communities under the Nazis. The LBI has locations in Jerusalem, London and New York/Berlin. Additionally, there are associations related to the LBI. The Förderverein of the LBI, a friends' association, has been in existence since 1957. In 1989, the Wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft des Leo-Baeck-Instituts (WAG) was founded with the aim of creating an organizational framework for the research and presentation of German-Jewish history.
