23rd Early Modern Workshop, University of Pennsylvania

March 10, 2026

The Early Modern Workshop invites proposals to participate in this summer’s meeting on the theme of “Ages and Stages of Life in Early Modern Culture.” from August 17 to 18, 2026 at the University of Pennsylvania. The Early Modern Workshop (EMW) brings together scholars from every level of their academic careers, from advanced graduate students to senior scholars, for an in-person gathering to examine pertinent historical questions based on the analysis of primary sources from the early modern period (approx. 1450-1800). This year’s theme is “Ages and Stages of Life in Early Modern Culture.” Matters of age permeate Jewish texts of varied genres. Jewish stages of life were socially and ritually constructed and demarcated, organizing belonging, authority, subordination, and difference. The cultural construction of age meant that life stages were not always fixed, but could fluctuate in response to gender and class.
